Gypsy-Jazz

There are so many different kinds of Jazz and not all people like Jazz because they do often belive that Jazz is just a bunch of notes or atonal humping around. The "Jazz-Manouche", also known as Gypsy- or Sintijazz (some guys in germany called it also "Zigeunerjazz" before, which is considered an abusive word today) yet is something else.

cover django reinhardtJazz-Manouche started in the early 1920ies in the area of Paris/France. See also the Gypsyjazz-History.

In that time young musicians like Django Reinhardt, Stephane Grapelli, Louis Vola, Joseph Reinhardt, Eugene Vees or Marcel Bianci came together and founded, initiated by Charles Delauney a great french Jazzfan and Mentor, the Band "Quintette du Hot Club de France".

This Formation played the actual Swing-Jazz-music of that time not on brass or blowing-intruments (unlike in that time Jazz was mainly played by saxophones, trupets or clarinets). But for the first time someone played it on their own instruments: violin, guitars and double-bass. Therefor this kind of jazz-music became known also as "String-Jazz",  thus Jazz that was beeing played on Stringed-Instruments. Later on Django Reinhardt also formed some setups of the Quintette du Hot Club de France which was hooked up with clarinette or Saxophon together with Alix Compbelle or Hubert Rostaing.

The "Quintette du Hot Club de France" has become worldfamous, way far over the borders of France, last but not least because of the musical genius of the young Django Reinhardt who was one of the first in the world to establish the guitar as a solo-instrument as one of the first players. With his incredible virtuosity, passion and verve, he was pushing the success of the Hotclub de France worldwide beyond any limits.

Even until today the godfather of european Jazz is influencing noumerous Guitarrists worldwide. Many generations of guitar-players named and still name Django Reinhardt as their great source of inspiration.

Amongst his admirers are such illustral and different famous Jazz- and Rock-legends like:

Charly Christian, Barney Kessel, Les Paul, Chet Atkins, John McLaughlin, Carlos Santana, Eric Clapton, Gary Moore, Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Romane und natürlich auch viele der heutigen Sintigitarristen wie Stochelo Rosenberg, Bireli Lagrene, Dorado Schmitt, Tschavolo Schmitt, David and Noe Reinhardt as many, many others more.

So Django Reinhardts´s legacy is still living on until today within a pretty active music-scene.

When i discovered a record of "Django Reinhardt & le Quintette du Hotclub de France" in the 1980ies i was immediately fascinated by the virtuosity, fun and the geniousity of playing by this great guitarrist, who played stuff - before i didnt even know that it was him who invented all this.

Meine erste Schallplatte von Django ReinhardtFrom that day on i dedicated myself to this music  and it never really let me go ever since.
Beginning of the early 2000, after a long musical journey through many other music-styles i returned to this music and finally dedicated myself fully to it.

I am fascinated by the musical freedom that i have hereby, to play whatever you like, beeing free beyond any limited borders.

Of course there are also limitations and musical rules to care for, as musical structures. But within improvisation there is freedom of play, something that isnt possible in other styles like Rock, Pop or Blues.

After that, in the following years between 2007 and 2009 i took part at couple of Workshops and Masterclasses of this style with Stochelo Rosenberg, Angelo DeBarre and Romane in France, i started also giving my own Workshops. In 2011 i finally released my first guitar methodbook "Gypsyjazz Guitar - a Trbute to Gypsyjazz" in german and 2013 in english language.

Finally for me as a teacher it was just been consequencent to offer this style as lessons and workshops ever since as well.
